Last Updated: December 1, 2025
1. Leave the Bandage On
Keep the bandage or Saniderm on for the amount of time your artist recommends (typically 1 hour if plastic wrap, 3-5 days if Saniderm/Second-Skin bandage). Do not lift bandage to peek at or touch the tattoo during this time.
2. First Wash
When it’s time to remove the bandage:
Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo. Wash with warm, soapy water, for at least 20 seconds.
Gently wash the tattoo with warm water and mild, fragrance-free soap.
Allow to air dry – do NOT use a towel & do NOT rub.
- Do NOT rebandage.
For information on removing Saniderm, see here:

3. Ointment / Moisturizing
After removal, apply a thin layer of the recommended ointment such as Aquafor, A&D, or Bacitracin) 3 times a day for the next three days or as needed.
- after 3 days, use an unscented lotion like Dermassage or Noxema until skin returns to its pre-tattoo condition.
Don’t over-apply — your tattoo needs to breathe.
4. For the First Week
Wash the tattoo area gently 2 times daily with warm water and mild soap.
Once dry, reapply ointment or lotion as needed.
Avoid picking, scratching, or touching – Let it peel naturally.
Wear clean, loose, soft clothing until the tattoo is healed.
5. Absolutely NO:
No swimming, hot tubs, saunas, or baths for 2–3 weeks. Showers are fine.
No tanning or sun exposure.
No gym equipment touching the area.
No scented lotions or alcohol-based products.
No rubbing, scratching, picking or peeling.
6. Long-Term Care
Keep SPF(25+) on the tattoo once it’s fully healed.
Moisturize regularly.
Touch-ups may be needed depending on placement, style, and healing.
7. If Something Feels Off
Some redness and soreness are normal.
If you experience unusual swelling, excessive redness, or any concerning reactions, notify your artist and contact a healthcare professional.
